Hartbeats has been running West African drumming classes in the High Wycombe area since 1998. Classes welcome complete beginners as well as developing and experienced drummers. Drums are provided.
Learn djembe and dundun drumming
Classes explore traditional West African rhythms on djembe and dundun drums. The djembe is a goblet-shaped drum played with the hands. Dunduns are the accompanying pitched bass drums, played with sticks, which provide the pulse and interlocking melodic parts that drive the music.
You will develop playing technique, listening, coordination, musical confidence and an understanding of how different parts combine to create a complete rhythm. Sessions also include call-and-response breaks and may include traditional songs.

- Djembe and dundun drumming: 6.30–7.55 pm
- West African dance: 8.00–9.00 pm
The beginner-friendly dance class explores energetic and expressive West African movements accompanied by live drumming. Some sessions also include dundun dance, which combines dance steps with playing the bass drums.

Joining a class
Beginners are very welcome. Hartbeats provides drums in a range of sizes, so you do not need to own an instrument before joining.
Pay As You Go and discounted Pay Per Month options are available. Classes are mainly attended by adults; please contact Justine before bringing a child or young person.
Class members may also have opportunities to perform with HARTBEATS Drummers at festivals, fêtes and community events.
