Beginners are welcome at the dance and family drumming workshops; the youth drumming workshop is for experienced players.
11.30–13.30: Youth West African Drumming Workshop for Experienced Drummers, ages 9–16
Build a full arrangement of a traditional West African rhythm, with djembe accompaniment parts, a break and an understanding of how the parts fit together. Develop your listening and enjoy playing the whole rhythm with a group of young drummers.
For young djembe players who know the basic sounds and have played several traditional accompaniment parts. Dundun parts will be demonstrated, and selected participants may have the opportunity to play them.
Young kit drummer? Players around Grade 3 or equivalent and above are welcome. An introductory djembe technique session runs from 11.15–11.30 for kit drummers who do not regularly play djembe and experienced young djembe players who are new to Justine’s classes or workshops.
A 30 minute break is included. Please bring a snack or packed lunch. Parents and guardians may drop participants off. An optional short demonstration for parents, family and friends follows at 13.35.
